Private Coba & Tulum Ruins Tour (departs from Akumal)
First, explore the archaeological site of Tulum, the only surviving Maya archaeological site set alongside the sea. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Built on a bluff facing the rising sun, which inspired its original Maya name Zama (or “city of dawn”) the stunning backdrop of the Caribbean Sea makes this site one of the most picturesque in the world! If you love local history then this is one place you have see!
Next, nestled deep in the jungle of the southern Yucatan Peninsula is the ancient city of Coba, a large ruined city of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Only recently restored and open to the public, the archaeological site of Coba attracts explorers from all over the world as its many restored buildings are scattered over a wide area in the dense sub-tropical rain forest. Located around two lagoons a series of elevated stone and plaster roads radiate from the central site to various smaller sites near and far. Coba is estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants (and possibly significantly more) at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 km². One its main attractions is the Ancient Pyramid which is still open for the public who dare to climb its 130 steps.
The perfect day for lovers of history, archaeology and those who want to immerse themselves in the world of the ancient Maya.
