3 Amazing Activities in Cozumel for the Entire Family

Cozumel island – Mexico’s first Caribbean destination – might be known by many as a tourist trap or cruise excursions hub, but beneath the consumerist facade and the outlandish Cozumel tours on offer, lies a surprisingly undeveloped land, with rugged jungle and quiet, deserted beaches. This idyllic island is the perfect escape for any family, combining the best of adventure and serenity.

1. Snorkel above colorful coral reefs

The local coral reefs are home to some of the best snorkeling in the world. Tropical fish, kaleidoscopic displays of natural coral, and other marine creatures enliven the 600-mile long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which stretches all the way from Cozumel to Central America.

2. Explore the Mayan ruins at El Cedral

The small-scale Mayan ruins at El Cedral, located towards the center of the island, may be small in stature, but offers large-scale insight into a lost time. Put your explorer hats on and get lost within the mysticism of Mayan culture.

3. Visit the museum in downtown Cozumel

Downtown, you’ll find one of the most interesting things to do in Cozumel. The Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, is a former luxury hotel turned local museum, that showcases exhibitions and displays of the island’s ecosystems along with its local development and conservation topics. On the second floor, you’ll find many Spanish and Mayan artifacts, and there’s also an exhibit on Cozumel’s 20th century cultural development. The museum won’t take long to explore, leaving enough time for watersports and fun on the beach.
