With a look, feel and style distinct from the rest of Mexico, San Cristóbal de las Casas has been a popular travelers’ destination for decades, and it’s easy to see why. Thick-wooded jungles, mountains and valleys, together with many traditional varieties of Mexican culture and indigenous roots, make up most of the Chiapas we know today.
One could argue that this is Mexico’s most scenic area; with mostly wild and rugged terrain flanked by a bustling city life and culture. Specifically in the mountains surrounding San Cristóbal, there are some fascinating Mayan ruins and villages that can be visited easily with half-day excursions. But beyond the attractions offered by the local Mayans, the surrounding landscape is rich in unique experiences.
1. Tour Sumidero Canyon by boat
A boat tour of Sumidero Canyon is the quintessential trip to take from San Cristobal de las Casas. It’s an extremely beautiful place, that’s not too far to reach, and an inexpensive way to see some of the most beautiful parts of the area.
2. Go swimming in the Chiflon waterfalls
El Chiflon is a stunning series of blue cascades that culminates with the enormous Velo de Novia waterfall, which plunges a dramatic 400 feet. And a quick walk along the path on the bank of Rio San Vicente for about for about a half a mile will reveal many viewpoints of the sparkling cascades.
3. Explore the countryside on horseback
And there’s no shortage of horseback riding opportunities. Consider a trail ride at Lagos de Montebello or through the pine forests surrounding Grutas de Rancho Nuevo, which winds its way through the meadows, farmland, and local streams. It’s a pleasant trail ride that makes up a mix of nature and local life.
The adventure tours throughout the Chiapas jungle allow for thrilling ziplining experiences, as the mountains are ripe for those who seek the thrill of soaring through the tall trees that grow throughout.
