Located halfway between the lively streets of Playa del Carmen and tour magnet of Tulum sits this quaint recreational reprieve. Known for its quiet streets, close proximity to the reef, welcoming marina, the area’s only Shipwreck Museum, Puerto Aventuras lives up to its name – the “Port of Adventures.”
Today, this private, gated community has developed to include villas, condos and hotels, and is considered the center for sport fishing in the area. Visitors often enjoy the small town feel of this development built on the ancient Mayans’ stomping grounds.
From snorkeling and strolling along the beach, to learning about the shipwrecks of the Mexican Caribbean and exploring Xibalbá at Kantun Chi, the hidden gems are plentiful.
You certainly won’t run out of things to do in Puerto Aventuras, that’s for sure. Check out the local wildlife while you practice your swing on the 36 par golf course which was designed by Thomas Leman in 1991. Then head to the marina where there are endless activities available, including swimming with dolphins and manatees,, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving. If you are in the mood to simply relax, head to the beaches of one of the three bays, Fatima, Chan Yu Yum or Chac Hal Al and spend the day relaxing under a beach umbrella with a good book.
But of all the Riviera Maya excursions on offer, Cenote Dos Ojos – often regarded as one of the best cenotes in Riviera Maya – should be at the top of your list. While the name “Dos Ojos” refers to two connected cenotes just north of Tulum, greater Dos Ojos actually encompasses 51 miles of flooded cave system with more than 28 known sinkholes. Popular among divers, the cave system has been featured in numerous IMAX films and Discovery Channel and BBC shows. Visitors appreciate the crystal clear water (it’s finely filtered through limestone) which maintains a year-round temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Puerto Aventuras’ elusive paradise appeal consistently makes for one of the best family vacation destinations in all of Mexico, and combined with its warm climate, tropical vegetation and endless adventure, you are bound to fall in love.
