Situated right in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen is the region’s top destination for shopping, dining and nightlife. There are plenty of things to in Playa del Carmen in addition to it being the gateway to the Mayan culture of the Yucatan Peninsula. Check on the Cozumel ferry schedule for a quick ride over to the island and an enjoyable day’s snorkeling or scuba diving.
Playa del Carmen is famous for its stylish beach clubs. Offering a pampering alternative to the public beaches, these clubs offer food and beverage services, a variety of spa treatments and aquatic sports, plus access to restrooms, showers and pools. After a leisurely day on the beach, head into town and take a stroll along the pedestrian Fifth Avenue, locally known as Quinta Avenida or La Quinta. This is the place to see and be seen in Playa del Carmen. By day it is packed with people browsing the shops and boutiques; by night roving musicians entertain diners in the many restaurants and bars.
If you want to shop, go to Paseo del Carmen, located at the southern end of the Fifth Avenue. You can walk through this open air mall along cobblestoned paths through to the different stores which include: Zara, American Apparel, Diesel, Bershka, Ultrafemme, and Harley Davidson. You can get a Starbucks fix while you are there or eat in the famous Rolandi’s Italian restaurant. This mall is obviously geared for tourists so be prepared for high prices.
