Visiting Cola de Caballo is consistently listed as one of the best things to do in Monterrey. Located in the town of Villa de Santiago, this natural wonder lies approximately 25 miles from Monterrey, is open to the public and accessible via a walking path.
The waterfall is formed from the waters flowing between the mountains of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. The paved road that leads to the waterfall is short and can be traversed by people of all ages and fitness levels. It is recommended to stop at the different viewpoints, and admire the varieties of lush vegetation, different species of birds, stunning rock formations and the many ravines entrenched with trees.
The territory around the waterfall has designated areas with grills, allowing visitors to prepare their own food and enjoy it there. Alternatively, you can also buy food and refreshments at one of the snack shops close by.
The Hotel, Hacienda Cola de Caballo, walking distance from the waterfall, has many exciting outdoor activities, such as bungee jumping and vertigo-inducing zip lines. However, for something quieter, you can enjoy ever-popular hot air ballooning, or indulge in the whirlpool tub and spa.
Arguably one of the best Mexican waterfalls in the country, in one of the most beautiful regions and close to the most exciting industrial city in all of Central America, Cola de Caballo is a must.
