Located about 220 miles north of the capital city of La Paz, the enchanting town of Loreto ranks among the most beautiful in all of Mexico. Founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries as “La Mision de Nuestra Señora de Loreto” it boasts some of the most spectacular views and best snorkeling that Baja California has to offer. For young and old alike this is a great place to spend some time exploring while on vacation.
One of the most popular activities for families are the boat trips out to the Coronado Island complex, which includes 5 picturesque desert islands: Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Catalina, all of which are protected as part of the Loreto National Marine Park. Large boats are prohibited in this region so access is by “panga”, a modest-sized, open, outboard-powered, fishing boat common throughout much of the developing world.
Just off any of the islands, in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez, which boasts an incredible abundance and variety of marine fauna, fun activities include scuba diving, swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking. with more than 800 species of fish, colorful coral, dolphins, playful sea lions and whales (in season) this is an unbeatable location to get wet and up close to some of the world’s most amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
Afterwards families can take time to explore the volcanic islands themselves which offer a variety of protected inlets, stretches of pristine white sand beaches, mountainous terrain, numerous cacti, birds and a few interesting animal species. This is an excellent opportunity to explore by hiking (or easy walking), or just relax and wind down after spending a few hours in the water. The shallow, protected and often crystal clear waters of the inlets are perfect environment for young children to play and swim safely.
