Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Maya, has grown considerably since its days as a fishing village. As the city has grown, so have the community and cultural events that inspire and highlight the uniqueness of this area. Throughout the year, Playa del Carmen and the cities along the coast of the Riviera Maya organize great local events to include visitors in the magic that has made this area so spectacular.
No longer simply a place offering some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving, throughout the year, different cities and cultural organizations hold large events open to the public in various locations. Some of the top events include:
The ‘Sacred Mayan Journey’, which is held in May, celebrates a sacred ritual honoring the pilgrimage of the ancient Mayans to the shrine of the goddess Ixchel on Cozumel Island.
The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival brings music to paradise. Framed in the heart of the most beautiful tourist area of the world, for four days the city becomes the host for the best national and international Jazz acts of all times, combining the most varied expressions of the genre.
The ‘Taste of Playa’ event highlights the creativity and cultural influences of chefs throughout the Riviera Maya who have helped to put many of the coastal cities on the map for residents and visitors. Local businesses organize a huge festival open to the public where over 40 restaurants gather in the city center to share their tastes with foodies from all over the world. The event is held in the month of November each year, and is recognized as one of the more unforgettable Mexican traditions.
