Private Acanceh & Mayapan Archaeological Site Tour
Begin this interesting historical journey with a visit to Acanceh, a little-known, ancient Maya archaeological site founded sometime between 200 and 300 AD, during the Early Classic period, and is located only a few miles from Mérida, the capital of the State of Yucatán. Acanceh, or “groan of the deer” in the Yucatec Maya language, once covered more than 4 square miles with almost 400 separate buildings. Next door, in a beautifully preserved 16th century colonial Catholic church, you will have the opportunity to witness one of the few existing examples of modern day worship of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Your next stop will be Mayapan, a Pre-Columbian Maya site a couple of miles south of the town of Telchaquillo in Municipality of Tecoh. Mayapan was the political and cultural capital of the Maya in the Yucatán Peninsula during the Late Post-Classic period from the 1220’s until the 1440’s. Estimates of the total city population are 15,000–17,000 persons with more than 4000 structures within the city walls, and additional dwellings outside.
After these visits your guide will recommend where to eat delicious local food and to shop if you are looking for local handcrafts. Wrap up your day with a refreshing swim in a beautiful cenote.
