Private Haciendas & Cenotes Tour
The Haciendas of Yucatan emerged as family businesses in colonial times (17th century) and have now become historical attractions for visitors to the Yucatan state. Many of the haciendas were originally cattle ranches and later converted to henequen farms. Henequén is a type of agave cactus (family Agavaceae) which is processed for its fibers, primarily to produce rope.
Visit three important haciendas on your tour:
Hacienda Yaxcopoil – an excellent example of a working hacienda that dates back to the 17th century, offering a taste of three centuries of history, from the pre-hispanic period, to Spanish colonial times and the years of henequen production.
Hacienda Temozon – once the most productive sisal estate in Yucatan and now the Peninsula’s largest and most luxurious hacienda hotel, Hacienda Temozon is the grand dame of plantation estates in the region with its cattle-market/rope-making past still visible in the ruins and artisans’ workshops that line it, and it’s beautiful 17th-century ruby-red architecture.
Hacienda Ochil – a tastefully restored hacienda with original workshops filled by modern day craftsmen and a small but very interesting museum. In the workshops watch master jewelers make the delicate gold and silver filigree pieces for which Yucatán is famous, women weave hammocks and embroider the white cotton dresses known as hipiles and men carve wood and stone.
A visit to two stunningly beautiful cenotes for swimming and a hacienda-style lunch make this a perfect day out.
