Playa del Carmen Shopping Guide

Playa del Carmen’s world-famous Fifth Avenue stretches an incredible 30 blocks from south to north and is now lined with hundreds of shops, bars, restaurants, spas and an assortment of boutique-style hotels to choose from. Day and night it is indeed an entertainment mecca and is definitely the place to go if shopping is on your list of things to do. There are no official opening hours on the Fifth Avenue as many of the shops are independently owned. As a general rule, you can expect things to be open from approximately 10am through until 10pm. No siesta time is enforced or observed.

When it comes to spending money most shops on the Fifth Avenue will accept Euros and American Dollars, although exchange rates will not be good. It is always best therefore to either exchange money at a bank or an official “Casa de Cambio” (money exchange house) before going shopping. Visa and Mastercard are also accepted in most establishments while AMEX and Discovery are not easy to use. In any flea market or souvenir shops prices are negotiable and merchants will often allow you to bargain. At any brand name stores, convenience stores and department stores, the prices are as advertised.

Here is a list of the grocery stores that are recommended. Each of them offer something a little different but all are quality stores that carry a wide range of products.
