Tulum Shopping Guide

The center of Tulum town is a 15-minute drive from the beach or beachfront hotel zone. It’s what you would expect from a small beach town that caters to tourists. Lots of cute shops full of sombreros, trinkets, Mexican tablecloths, silverware, hand-painted ceramics and all the local handcrafts you could wish for. It’s definitely worth the trip to have a look. In the hotel zone located alongside the beach you will find some very beautiful, small boutiques, not many but worth a look as you take a walk to dinner.

When it comes to spending money most shops in Tulum will accept American Dollars, although exchange rates will not be good. It is always best therefore to either exchange money at a bank or an official “Casa de Cambio” (money exchange house) before going shopping. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted in most establishments while AMEX and Discovery are not easy to use. In any flea market or souvenir shops prices are negotiable and merchants will often allow you to bargain. At any brand name stores, convenience stores and department stores, the prices are as advertised.

Here are the two grocery stores that are recommended (and the only two in Tulum worth visiting!). Each of them offer something a little different but both are quality stores that carry a wide range of products.

  • San Francisco de Assis
  • Chedraui
